Course Evaluations supports the Student Evaluation of Teaching Effectiveness (SETE) instrument and scoring algorithm developed by the University of North Texas (UNT). This document outlines the steps necessary to ensure the successful generation of SETE scores.
External Control Variables
There are several control variables that are used in conjunction with the SETE survey responses to generate the SETE scores. All of these control variables are optional, but it is important to be consistent. If you are using a variable for courses, students, or faculty… use them for the entire population. SETE may have issues sampling if only a few members in the population have control data set.
The tables below describe the control variables and how each value is made available to the SETE algorithm through Course Evaluations.
# | Variable | Required | Comes from |
| Student ID | Inherent | System ID from Course Evaluations. Does not identify a student externally. |
| Faculty ID | Inherent | System ID from Course Evaluations. Does not identify a person externally. |
| UniqueCourseId | Inherent | System ID from Course Evaluations. Relates to Course + survey + instructor |
| Course College | Yes* | Configurable. This is from a level in the Course Evaluations hierarchy |
| Course Size | Inherent | Count of survey participants in a course. If using cross-listing features in Course Evaluations, this is the "Master course" |
| Course Time | Course import. Augmented data item. Relates to a number that refers to a day of week and time of day range for the course.
| Course Internet Other | a.k.a. "Delivery Method". Included in course import as the course type or course designator. Configurable for the SETE process.
| Course Department | Inherent | Course import required data item. |
| Room | Course import. Augmented data item. Free form, refers to a building/room.
| Faculty Gender | Faculty import. Augmented data item. M/F or Male/Female.
| Faculty Age | Faculty import. Augmented data item. Import as birth date. Course Evaluations will calculate age when the process runs.
| Faculty Rank | Faculty import. Augmented data item. Refers to rank/level/position title.
| UNT Years | Faculty import. Augmented data item. Import as start date. Course Evaluations will calculate # of years of employment or affiliation when the process runs.
| Instruction Type | Defaults to "1" if not included | Included in course import as the course type or course designator. Configurable for the SETE process. |
| Instruction Department | Inherent | Faculty import. Home department for faculty member. |
| Student Credits Earned | Student import. Augmented data item. Free form, 4 characters permitted. Could potentially be the aggregate number of credit hours earned at the institution.
| Student Course Load | Student import. Augmented data item. Free form, 4 characters permitted. Could potentially be the aggregate number of credit hours or courses taken for the current evaluation period.
| Student Pre Requirements | Student enrollment augmented import. Y/N flag to indicate whether pre-requisites have been met for a particular course.
| Student Major | Inherent - Defaults to student program if not included | Student import. Augmented data item. Free form, 30 characters permitted. If the major is not included, the process will revert to the student program. |
| Student Academic Level | Student import. Augmented data item. 20 characters permitted, but should refer to a number from 1-7 relating to Freshman through Doctoral.
| Student GPA Mean | Student import. Augmented data item. 5 characters permitted. May refer to the student overall GPA or the GPA for the current semester.
| Student Anticipated Grade | From survey | SETE Instrument. This comes from a standard question (D02) on the SETE survey instrument. |
| Course Grade Assigned to Student | Student enrollment augmented import. Single character grade. Standard A-F plus additional indicators.
